Phases and Features of a Disaster
Phase Features
Warning period – Some disasters give warning while others do not, e.g. earthquakes and airplane crashes.
Anxiety and apprehension are generated during warning period.
Impact period – It is the actual occurrence of the disaster.
Death and destruction occurs, which may cause panic.
Threat period – In this period people remain worried about their lives and families.
Inventory period – Survivors exhibit fear, anger, sorrow, apprehension and depression
They may develop emotional scars which may remain with them for the rest of their lives.
Rescue period – Survivors help each other to cope. They cooperate.
Some of them come out of their apathy.
Some may remain in shock.
