Medicinal use of Balm of Gilead, Basil Sweet, Black Haw, Blue Cohosh

Balm of Gilead: Populus Balsamifera or Candicans

Part Used : Buds

Stimulant,  expectorant

The resinous substance is not acted upon by water alone. An infusion cannot be made. Boiled in oil makes an excellent ointment or salve. Valuable in colds, lung, kidney and urinary difficulties.

 

Basil(sweet) : Ocium basilicum, Ocymum

Part Used: Root

Relaxant, expectorant, slightly narcotic sedative, antispasmodic , nervine

Exerts a marked influence over the nervous system. For epilepsy, convulsions, acute rheumatism, sciatica, St. Vitus Dance, neuralgia, spinal meningitis, snake-bite poisoning, delirium tremens. Brings on menstrual flow retarded by cold or exposure. Relives cramp in menstrual period. Wonderful remedy for high blood pressure and whooping cough.

 

Black Haw : Viburnum prunifolium

PART USED : Bark of root

Diuretic, tonic, antispasmodic, nervine, astringent

Counteracts threatened abortion. Relieves after pains. Good for ovarian irritation, asthma, hysteria. A valuable ingredient of female tonics.

 

Blue Cohosh: caulophyllum thalictorides   

Part Used: Root

Emmenagogue, parturient, antispasmodic

Valuable remedy in epilepsy, uterine disorders, leucorrhoea, dropsy, cramp, colic, hysteria, diabetes, high blood pressure. Helps to alkalinize blood and urine. Makes childbirth easy an infusion taken for a week or two preceding confinement renders delivery comparatively rapid and painless.
