Radiation hazards
Workers are exposed to radiation in various forms in the following areas.
- Exposure to ultraviolet rays occurs I arc and other electric welding processes.
- Many industries use radium and other radioactive substances. Exposure to radium also occurs in mining of radioactive ores and monazite sand workers.
- X- rays are used in industry and medicine.
- Infrared rays are produced in welding, glass blowing, the molten state and in heating and drying of painted objects.
Ionizing radiation can cause bone marrow depression and blood dyscrasias. Lung cancer may develop in miners working in uranium mines. Radiation in arc welding mainly affects the eyes, causing conjunctivitis and keratitis.
Prevention
- Adequate ventilation of work – place is necessary to prevent inhalation of harmful material.
- Direct skin contact or inhalation should be avoided.
- In case of X- rays, shielding should be used.
- Pregnant women should not be allowed to work in places where there is continuous exposure.
- Suitable protective clothing should be given to prevent contact with harmful material.
- The employees should be monitored at intervals not exceeding 6 months for total radiation received.
