First aid treatment of phosphorous poisoning its causes, prevention and diagnose-“Occupational Hazards”

Phosphorous Poisoning

Acute phosphorous poisoning is seen following ingestion of rat poison, in agricultural workers who use fertilizers, pesticides, and insecticides are used.

The condition is diagnosed by the following features.

1. There is pain in throat and abdomen.
2. There is intense thirst.
3. Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea follow.
4. There is odor of garlic on breath.
5. Cramps are present.
6. There is headache.
7. Profound weakness is experienced.

First Aid

1. Give repeated stomach was with 1% copper sulphate solution followed by 1:10,000 potassium permanganate solution. Leave mineral oil in stomach at the end of the stomach wash.
2. Treat shock, dehydration and acidosis.
3. Avoid fats and oils in the diet for several days, because they promote absorption of phosphorous.
