The causes of dermatitis in industries may be as follows. Primary irritants act on the skin directly. These include acids, alkalies, dyes solvents, etc. sensitizing chemicals pass through the epidermis and react with protein to produce antibodies. The skin reacts to this.

Causes of Occupational Dermatitis

Cause                                               Examples

Physical – Heat, cold, moisture, pressure, friction, X-rays.

Chemicals – Acids, alkalis, grease, solvents, dyes, pitch, tar, chlorinated phenols.

Biological – Bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, plants, and plant products.

The condition is diagnosed by the following features.

  1. There is erythema accompanied by irritation at the site of contact with the irritant.
  2. Vesicles may from, which burst to produce weeping lesions.
  3. Sensitivity rashes may occur.

Prevention

Occupational dermatitis is preventable if proper control measure is adopted.

  1. The workers should be medically examined before employment, and those with an established or suspected dermatitis or predisposition should not be given that job.
  2. The workers should be given protective clothing, long leather gloves, and boots. These articles should be frequently washed maintained in good condition.
  3. Protective creams should be used regularly and properly.
  4. There should be an adequate supply of warm water and soap.
  5. The workers should be examined periodically.
