Angina pectoris
It is a retrosternal pain due to cardiac ischemia. It occurs on physical activity, due to the coronary arteries being unable to deliver adequate amount blood to the heart muscle in face of increased demands. It is due to partial occasion of the vessels due to theroscleriosis. It may occur after a heavy meal, due to the blood supply being shunted to the gastrointestinal tract.
The condition is diagnosed by the following features:
- There is pain behind the sternum. It is gripping or constricting in nature. It may spread to the left shoulder and left arm. It usually lasts for 2-5 minutes. It is relived by rest.
- There may be a feeling of tingling in the arms.
- The patient may look pale and anxious.
- Pulse rate is rapid.
Prevention
- Avoid smoking and consumption of alcohol.
- Avoid fatty foods.
- Avoid excessive physical activity.
First aid
- Place a tablet of isosorbide trinitrate under the tongue.
- Send him to a hospital immediately
