Relief work and Problems faced in Disasters

Every community should have a civil defense plan and organization, to be used not only for all disasters. First aiders, nurses, paramedical people, police, military and volunteers must participate in this work.

Problems that need to be solved in a disaster are as follows.

  1. The electric power supply is impaired. The telephone lines become nonfunctional, making it difficult to call for help from the fire or police department, or to contact the doctors.
  2. Electric motors will not work and hence water supply will be stopped. Whatever water exists may not be safe to drink.
  3. The streets may be so damaged that it will be impossible for help to reach you.
  4. Even if the grocery stores survive the disaster, their goods may too damage to be safe for consumption.
  5. Diseases thrive under disaster conditions.
  6. Sanitation may become poor, spreading diseases.
  7. Childbirth or miscarriage can take place under conditions of stress.
